OCTOPUS

The octopus is a benthic species characterized by direct development, a short life cycle, and remarkable motor intelligence and visual acuity. Its coloration is highly variable, rapidly adapting to the environment, ranging from brown to green, yellow, and white. The octopus's body has a warty texture.

It possesses eight tentacles of equal length, each equipped with two rows of suction cups used for capturing prey and locomotion. At the base of these tentacles lies the siphon, which enables rapid propulsion through water.

In Mauritania, octopuses inhabit a variety of bottom types, with a preference for fine to coarse sand sediments. They construct burrows in these soft substrates to seek refuge from predators, venturing out only for feeding and reproduction.

Squid

Squid, or Teuthida, is a morphological group of marine cephalopods that emerged in the early Jurassic period. These cuttlefish-like creatures, numbering around 300 species, often lack specific vernacular names and are commonly referred to as "calmar" in French. Similarly, the term "squid" is a general vernacular name, frequently used in reference to edible or bait species, but it also encompasses other cephalopods such as cuttlefish.

Historically, these animals were classified together in the order Teuthida. However, more recent phylogenetic studies have revealed that this grouping is paraphyletic. As a result, the morphological definition of "squid" now encompasses species from both the Myopsida and Oegopsida orders, with the latter being significantly larger.
